Columbia was incorporated from Lebanon in May, 1804, and given its name for the poetic name of the United States. Its foundation as a separate entity was laid in 1716 when a group of residents from Lebanon's north end formed their own parish, which came to be known as Lebanon Crank. Moor's Indian Charity School, birthplace of Dartmouth College, was established in 1755 by Rev. Eleazor Wheelock, providing American Indians with education and religious training. The school is still standing today, and is one of the sites of historical interest in Columbia.
